Crawl Back to Jesus

The Prodigal Son is one of the most popular parables Jesus told. I’m sure as I’m writing this, someone is right now preaching about the exact same thing. Just in case you don’t know, the prodigal son goes like this: A man had two sons. One of the sons came to him and said, “ Father, give me all that was promised to me. His father gives him his share, and the boy leaves for another country. He spends his entire fortune buying houses and friends, and once all the money is gone, so are all his friends and the things he bought. He was forced to work in the pig pen and ate what the pigs ate. Sitting in the pen, he decides that being a servant to his father is better because at least he would eat better food. He goes to his father and tells him he will be his servant. His father then rejoices and tells his servants to give him the best robe, ring, and to give him the best calf. He later throws a celebration to celebrate his son being alive. I know that's not the entire parable, but I’m only focusing on this part specifically.

Arguably, this is one of the most powerful parables Jesus ever told; it's also one that a lot of people misinterpret. Parents hear this and say, “Yeah, it's saying that if my kid leaves home,e I should just wait for them to fail so they can come crawling back!” They think that, and it completely takes away from the actual message, and instead of being the supportive parents that they should be, they are praying for their child’s downfall. This message is not at all about parental control and your rebellious children. You want it to be, if we're being honest, stop it because all it's doing is weaponizing and manipulating scripture.

This parable is not about your child; it's not even about parenting. It’s about abandoning your relationship with Jesus when things aren’t going the way you want them to. Our Father in heaven created with a purpose and an “inheritance.” If we decide to be like the prodigal son and go our own way, God will allow us. When we return, we are once again welcomed with open arms, and we are accepted into his kingdom. Coming back to God isn’t easy at all. We may feel like we don’t deserve it. But because of his grace & mercy, we can receive his blessings.

Say hypothetically you read this, and you still want to make it about your rebellious child. Whatever, that's fine, but don’t sit there and pray that your child comes crawling back to you,” pray that they come crawling back to Jesus. Most of the time, they feel that they have no one else to turn to, and it's a parent’s Job to teach them that they always do.
